Parts of Speech VI- GERUNDS

A gerund is the -ing form of a verb used as a noun ( as opposed to the present participle which is the -ing form as a verb structure). A gerund is used in the same way as a noun, i.e. as a subject or an object.

> Playing tennis is fun.
* Playing is a gerund. It is used as the subject of the sentence

> We enjoy playing tennis.
* Playing is used as the object of the verb enjoy.

> He's excited about playing tennis.
* Playing is used as the object of the preposition about

Note

Some verbs, such as admit, consider, delay, remember, like etc. are usually followed by the gerund form when another verb is used.

> He admitted stealing the money.

Preposition are sometimes followed by the gerund if an action is indicated.

> Sue always has a coffee before attending a staff meeting.
